Google & Microsoft: A curious case of trust deficit

NEW YORK: The antitrust probe into Google invites comparisons to the case against Microsoft.

But however easy the links are to make, many are also facile. The most significant resemblance between the two situations may be their outcomes.

Google is seen in some circles to be using its dominance in one area to muscle unfairly into others, as Microsoft did. There's even some similar nerdish arrogance. Microsoft founder Bill Gates was famously testy about being deposed by the powers that be. Google's Eric Schmidt and Larry Page recently declined a request by a US Senate subcommittee to testify.

Yet the prosecution's case against Microsoft was relatively simple. Windows held about 95 percent of the market for PC operating systems in the late 1990s. Microsoft forced computer makers to use its Internet browser if they wanted to sell machines running Windows. Customers were constrained. Downloading a rival browser wasn't easy and switching to a machine not running Windows was painful.

Add it all up and Microsoft had a monopoly, abused its position and government intervention was the only immediate cure.

Google's situation is more complex. The firm claims only about two-thirds of the US search market, and its share is increasing slowly. Rivals also accuse Google of putting its services first. For example, its own maps might turn up in search results. But customers can easily use other search engines or type in a website address directly, and search doesn't appear to be a utility in need of regulation.

Smartphones could make a more compelling study. More than a third are now powered by Google's Android, according to comScore, and the figure is growing quickly.

Apps are a potential way to lock in consumers. Withholding the system's latest version from handset makers that favor a rival's services could be a potent stick for Google to wield. Yet its current market share should preclude any immediate challenge.

Though the Microsoft case was simpler, it still took over a decade to resolve. And the most important result was the company pledging to restrain itself.

The Google probe could uncover most anything, but for now the tortuous path and the end result are starting to look like they might be the real kinship to Microsoft.

Facebook hires iPhone, PS3 hacker 'Geohot'

WASHINGTON: Facebook has confirmed that it has hired George Hotz, a celebrated hacker known as "GeoHot" who was sued by Sony for hacking the Japanese company's PlayStation 3 game console.

A Facebook spokeswoman confirmed in an email to AFP that Hotz had been hired by the social network but declined to say when he had started or what he was doing for the Palo Alto, California-based company.

Hotz, who is credited with being the first person to go public with a way to hack into an iPhone, reached a settlement with Sony in April in the PS3 hacking case.

Sony had accused Hotz of violating federal law by posting online information that could be used to circumvent the PS3 security system and allow for play of pirated videogames.

In mid-April, Internet vigilante group Anonymous began staging cyberattacks on Sony's online services, including the PlayStation Network, in retaliation for the legal action against Hotz and another hacker, Alexander Egorenkov.

Anonymous argued that PS3 console owners have the right to do what they wish with their consoles, including modifying them.

Sony's PlayStation Network, Qriocity music streaming service and Sony Online Entertainmentwere among the online services targeted in cyberattacks and data breaches which compromised more than 100 million accounts.

Tim Schaaff, president of Sony Network Entertainment International, said Wednesday that the level of activity on the PlayStation Network had returned to more than 90 percent of what it was before the cyberattacks began in April.

Official : Angry Birds Board Game 'Knock on Wood' Now Available!

We have been waiting for an Angry Birds board game for quite some time now. The gameplay on smartphones and tablets just seems like it would lend itself to a real-world game so well and our wish has finally been answered. Knock on Wood is the official Angry Birds board game and it’s available right now!
Build! Launch! Destroy! To get things going one player draws a mission card describing a structure to build. Once the structure is complete the opposing player(s) load a bird in the slingshot and try to knock the snickering green pigs and their rickety fortress out for good. 2-4 people can play and just like the app each mission card determines which birds, and how many, you get to launch at each structure.
If you can’t wait to take the Angry Birds and those annoying green pig off the screen and into the real world head over to ThinkGeek. Knock on Wood costs about 24 bucks, but we’re sure it will be entertaining. We just hope there are enough pieces to build a bunch of different structures and keep the fun going for a long time.

Peppered by 150 shotgun pellets: Victim survives but will die 25 years early because doctors can't remove them

An X-ray shows the horrific wounds of a man peppered with more than 150 shotgun pellets.
Joe Clarke, 33, survived the terrifying doorstep attack, but doctors could not remove any of the pellets because some had penetrated his vital organs.
Medics have told him the horrific injuries will send him to an early grave - reducing his life expectancy by at least 25 years.

In December 2007, two men brandishing sawn-off shotguns opened fire on Mr Clarke when he answered the door of his home in Fairways, Consett, County Durham.
The steel or lead pellets entered his back, head and neck. He still managed to flee and only escaped possible death when a neighbour pulled him to safety inside their own home.
Eight months after the attack, which is alleged to have stemmed from a row with his former girlfriend, five men were charged with conspiring to murder him

But their trial collapsed when police methods, including raids on the defendants’ solicitor Paul Donoghue’s home and reading files, were called into question.

The defendants, Paul Railton, 23, of Leeholme Court, Annfield Plain; his uncle, Gary Railton, 42, of Windermere Terrace, Stanley; Simon Cairns, 20, of South View Gardens, Annfield Plain; Neil Spoor, 39, of Earnest Terrace, Stanley and Abbie Whitehead, 23, of Pemberton Avenue, Consett, denied the charge and were all cleared along with Mr Donoghue.
Durham Police’s handling of the case is now subject to an investigation by the Independent Police Complaints Commission.
Mr Clarke said: 'I have lost everything. I have been told that all the pellets lodged inside me will take 25 years off my life.'
He is still living with the affects of the shooting, which has left him in daily pain. 'The hospital said that they have never seen anything like it.
'I feel as though I’m the only one serving a sentence because of what happened, and there will be no justice.'
Describing the moment he was shot, Mr Clarke said: 'The sensation was like this terrible burning feeling – I’m still in pain now.
'But the mental side-effects are much worse than the physical injuries. I’m still scared.
“My life since I was shot has been hell.'

Google kills Google Health, PowerMeter services

SAN FRANCISCO: Google announced that it is pulling the plugs on free Health and PowerMeterservices that haven't won legions of users.

"We're going to retire two products that didn't catch on the way we would have hoped, but did serve as influential models," Google Health senior product manager Aaron Brown and Green Energy Czar Bill Weihl said in a blog post.

"While they didn't scale as we had hoped, we believe they did highlight the importance of access to information in areas where it?s traditionally been difficult," they said.

A PowerMeter service for tracking home electricity use will shut down on September 16.

Google Health service for storing and selectively sharing personal medical records online will "retire" on January 1 but users will be able to download their information through the following year.

"Both were based on the idea that with more and better information, people can make smarter choices, whether in regard to managing personal health and wellness, or saving money and conserving energy at home," Brown and Weihl said.

Google Health launched in early 2008 and PowerMeter software made its debut in late 2009.

I didn't want to die at hands of cops: Baba Ramdev

NEW DELHI: In sharp contrast to his visit earlier this month when four Union ministers had waited on him, yoga guru Baba Ramdev arrived in the capital on Sunday and was greeted by a huge contingent of police and a handful of followers.

Ramdev visited Rajbala, the woman injured during the June 4 police crackdown on his fast against corruption. The action still played on his mind as an agitated Baba addressed a press conference, accusing the Delhi Police of conspiring to kill him and molesting his women followers.

He said he was determined as ever to continue the "struggle" against corruption — alongside anyone from "any party, any religion, any cat...as long as it kills the rat".

During the course of the emotional interaction, the Baba recounted the night of June 4 when he had "waited to be arrested but no one came". "Woh logon ko hatana aur mujhe mitana chahta thhe (The police wanted to evacuate people and eliminate me)," he said, alleging that the dais was deliberately set on fire.

Ramdev was at pains to explain why he escaped that night dressed as a woman. "I didn't want to die the death of a wolf, I didn't want to die the death of an animal, I didn't want to die at the hands of the police which has become the puppet of the government. So I decided to escape. I was arrested outside. If they had caught me inside, I would not have been seen again," he said.

He termed the Ramlila Maidan incident as "murder of democracy", adding that he had come toDelhi on the 36th anniversary of the Emergency, and the situation now was again akin to those dark days.

Asked if his return to Delhi was an indication that he would join the fast by Anna Hazare, the Baba was noncommittal. " Abhi 16 tareeq mein kaafi samay hai (There's still a lot of time before August 16)," Ramdev replied. Pressed on the issue, he said, "The issue is not Hazare or Ramdev, but corruption."

Accusing the government of not wanting to create a strong Lokpal, Ramdev was scathing about the government's unwillingness to fight corruption. " Sarkar pehle bhrashtachari thhi, abh woh atyachari bhi ho gayi (Earlier, the government was corrupt, now it is cruel as well)," he said.

Answering talk of him having amassed wealth illegally, the yoga preacher said the government was free to use all its might to investigate if he had any black money. "If you find anything from Re 1 to one lakh crore, seize it and declare it as national asset."

Deriding the government's stand of putting the PM and MPs out of the Lakpal's ambit, the Baba said, "The government feels it's more important to bring NGOs and trusts within the bill's purview." Denying the support of right-wing parties, Ramdev claimed he was not a mask for anyone. He claimed he had broken his fast on the advice of spiritual leaders Morari Bapu and Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, who told him that the condition of a large number of women and children who were fasting with him, had worsened.

The Baba was in full flow, accusing the Congress of being unwilling to be transparent. He claimed he had proof that donations given to the Rajiv Gandhi Trust had not been audited, in contrast to the accounting of funds that had been put up on the Patanjali Ashram website.

He also announced that a "shivir" on free housing scheme would be started from July 1 at Haridwar, followed by a programme on August 4 to empower 624 villages with indigenous products, making them ideal swadeshi villages.
